Gamers in the U.S. will soon have to pay more for a PlayStation 5. Sony announced that all PS5 models will see a $50 price increase starting August 21, citing rising costs and ongoing tariff pressures.

How Much Will the PS5 Cost Now?

The updated prices for the U.S. market are:

  • PlayStation 5 Standard Edition: $499.99
  • PlayStation 5 Pro: $749.99
  • Digital and Slim models: Increase by roughly $50 each

Sony confirmed that the price hike only affects consoles. Accessories such as controllers and headsets will remain at current prices.

Why Are Prices Going Up?

The announcement comes as President Donald Trump’s tariffs on imports—including goods from Japan—raise costs for companies like Sony. Japanese exporters currently face a 15% tariff on products shipped to the U.S.

Sony’s Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing, explained in a company blog post:

“We’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the US starting on 21 August.”

This move follows earlier price adjustments in the UK and Europe, where Sony cited inflation and currency fluctuations as the main reasons.

Rising Costs Across the Gaming Industry

Sony is not alone in raising prices.

  • Nintendo recently increased the cost of the original Switch, with titles like Mario Kart World now retailing at ÂŁ75 ($95).
  • Microsoft also hiked prices for Xbox consoles and accessories in several markets.

The higher costs reflect a broader trend: global companies across industries are adjusting prices in response to tariffs. Adidas, Nike, and even U.S. retailer Home Depot have all warned of higher consumer costs tied to new import taxes.

What It Means for Gamers

For U.S. gamers, this means the PS5 is now more expensive than ever, even as demand cools in a slower gaming market. With tariffs unlikely to ease soon, the cost of next-gen gaming could continue climbing, making console ownership a pricier investment.
