Diogo Jota, forward for Liverpool and the Portugal national soccer team, died at age 28 in a car crash in Spain. His younger brother, André Silva, also lost his life in the accident.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight on July 3. While driving a Lamborghini along the A‑52 motorway near Cernadilla, Zamora, Jota reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to a suspected tyre blowout. The car veered off the road, overturned, and caught fire. Authorities confirmed that both men died at the scene.

Silva, 25, played as a defender for Portuguese club Penafiel.

Jota had joined Liverpool in 2020 and quickly became a key player. Over five seasons, he scored 65 goals in 182 appearances and played a major role in helping the club secure the 2024–25 Premier League title. Internationally, he earned 49 caps for Portugal and scored 14 goals, most recently appearing at Euro 2024.

Just weeks before the crash, Jota married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso. The couple had three children.

‘Unimaginable Loss’

Cristiano Ronaldo also shared his reaction: “It doesn’t make sense. We were only just in the national team together.”

As tributes continue, UEFA has announced that all Women’s Euro 2025 games will observe a minute of silence in honor of both brothers. Portugal has declared a national day of mourning.
