Jonathan Joss, ‘King of the Hill’ Voice Actor, Killed in Shooting

Jonathan Joss, best known as the voice behind John Redcorn in “King of the Hill,” died in a shooting on June 1 in San Antonio. He was 59 years old.

Joss returned to the site of his former home, which was destroyed by fire earlier this year. He was there with his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales.

According to reports, they were confronted by a neighbor, Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja. Witnesses say Alvarez Ceja shouted slurs before opening fire. Reportedly, Joss shielded his husband, saving him. Authorities have charged Alvarez Ceja, 56, with murder.

“Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone, we were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life,” de Gonzales said in a statement.

The case is under active investigation.

Beyond ‘King of the Hill’

Joss was known for more than his role on “King of the Hill.” He also portrayed Chief Ken Hotate in “Parks and Recreation” and appeared in “Ray Donovan,” “Tulsa King,” “True Grit,” and “The Magnificent Seven.” This Agust, he was set to return as John Redcorn in Hulu’s reboot of the animated series.

A descendant of the Comanche and White Mountain Apache tribes, Joss actively promoted Native representation in media. He and Gonzales married earlier this year on Valentine’s Day.

Jonathan Joss’s death has brought grief to fans and friends. Nonetheless, his work in television and support for Native voices left a strong legacy. His final project is expected to premiere this summer.
