Your Guide to the 2025 NYC Election: Key Dates and What Is at Stake
The November 4 general election is approaching, giving every registered New Yorker the power to determine the city’s direction. From the mayor’s office to the City Council, your vote will have a direct impact on the five boroughs. This is not the time to stay home. Here is what you need to understand about participating in the general 2025 NYC election, including the crucial dates to circle on your calendar.

Who Can Cast a Ballot?
Any registered New York voter, 18 years or older, is eligible to participate in the November general election. If you are not yet registered, the deadline is October 25. You cannot vote if you miss this date. Verify your registration status and party affiliation immediately at voterlookup.elections.ny.gov.
Important Deadlines for Voters
Pay close attention to these dates to ensure your vote is counted.
- Mail-In Ballots: The NYC Board of Elections will begin accepting mail-in ballots from voters on September 17. For information on getting a mail-in or absentee ballot, go to vote.nyc/requestballot.
- Early Voting: The early voting period starts on Saturday, October 25, and continues through Sunday, November 2. Find your designated early voting site at vote.nyc.
- Election Day: Election Day is Tuesday, November 4. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. You must vote at your assigned polling location, which you can find at vote.nyc.
- Ballot Return: If you are voting by early mail or absentee ballot, it must be returned to your local poll site or a Board of Elections office by November 4.
The Races on Your Ballot
Voters will make decisions on several critical citywide and local positions, including Mayor, City Comptroller, Public Advocate, Borough Presidents, and City Council Members. Additionally, important ballot questions regarding the City Charter will be presented. Depending on your borough, you may also see contests for civil court judges, district attorney for Manhattan and the Bronx, and other judgeships. To see a personalized sample ballot, visit the NYC Board of Elections website or vote411.org.
A Return to Traditional Voting
This election operates differently than the June primary. Ranked-choice voting will not be used for the general election. You will select one candidate per race. The individual who receives the most votes wins. Read your ballot instructions with care, as some judicial races may require you to select multiple candidates.
How to Prepare
Informed participation is crucial. Before you vote, take these steps:
- Review sample ballots and research candidate platforms at nycvotes.org.
- Confirm your voting location by visiting vote.nyc.
- Understand your options for casting your ballot at nycvotes.org/how-to-vote.
Whether you vote early, by mail, or on November 4, your participation is fundamental. The city’s leadership will be determined by those who show up. Make your voice heard.
