Your Citi Bike Ride Is Changing Forever: Mandatory Age Checks Are Coming Now
Get ready to prove your age before you pedal. Lyft, the operator of the Citi Bike program, has agreed to implement a mandatory age verification system for all users within the next three months. This decision follows a direct demand from First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro to curb the pervasive issue of underage teens riding the service’s e-bikes.

City Hall Lays Down the Law
The clock started ticking after an August 12 request from Mastro, who insisted Lyft enforce its own long-standing rule that restricts riders to 16 years of age and older. The company formally agreed on August 15, committing to a system that will require all users to verify their age before they can unlock a bike.
“Safety is our top priority, which extends to ensuring that Citi Bike riders meet our minimum age of 16 years,” Michael Brous, a president at Lyft, stated in a letter to the deputy mayor.
A ‘Complex’ Fix with a Tight Deadline
While the exact method has not been finalized, Lyft is now scrambling to evaluate options. The company described the process as “complex,” requiring a multi-step approach that includes selecting vendors, negotiating contracts, and performing the necessary engineering work, all while protecting user privacy.
Citi Bike General Manager Patrick Knoth said the goal is to introduce a verification option that “minimizes friction for riders.”
Latest Move in a Wider E-Bike Safety Push

The city imposed this new requirement on the bike-share giant, the latest in a series of safety measures. Just two months ago, Mastro issued an emergency mandate that forced Lyft to cap its e-bike speeds at 15 mph, down from 18 mph. The city had threatened direct action, including possibly locking or removing the bikes, if Lyft failed to meet its safety demands.
The city’s aggressive stance is supported by alarming statistics. According to the latest NYPD data, e-bike collisions across the five boroughs have surged by 30.1% year to date. There have been 480 crashes so far in 2025, compared to 369 during the same period last year.
The push for age verification gained momentum following a widely circulated op-ed by venture capitalist Bradley Tusk, who highlighted the dangers of underage e-bike use from a parent’s perspective. “Today’s announcement will save lives,” Tusk said following the news. “It will save families from heartbreak. It will save teenagers from their own bad judgment.”
For the millions of New Yorkers who rely on the blue bikes, this means a permanent change to the unlocking process is on the horizon. The next time you are heading out for a ride, be prepared for your app to ask for more than just a tap.
