Founded in 1983 by Dick Zigun, the self-proclaimed “Mayor of Coney Island,” the Mermaid Parade is the nation’s largest art parade. It celebrates the artistic vision of the masses, featuring everything from marching bands and dancing groups to fantastical sea creatures and mer-folk. Participants don elaborate, often handmade costumes, showcasing the community’s ingenuity and flair.

The parade begins at West 21st Street and Surf Avenue, proceeding east to West 10th Street. Marchers and push-pull floats then head south to the Boardwalk, continuing west to Steeplechase Plaza under the iconic Parachute Jump, where the parade concludes.

Following the parade, around 4 PM, a procession led by the event’s King Neptune and Queen Mermaid moves from the Judges’ stands. Starting at 19th Street and Surf Avenue through the Maimonides Park parking lot to the beach. Here, the official beach ceremony takes place, symbolically opening the ocean for the summer swimming season.

Getting There

Given the large crowds and limited parking, it’s highly recommended to use public transportation. The D, F, N, and Q subway lines all stop at Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue. It is just a short walk from the parade route.
