Record 16 Billion Passwords Exposed in Global Data Breach

A new data breach has leaked over 16 billion login records, setting a new record for the largest scale of data exposed. The exposed information includes usernames, passwords, session cookies, and tokens tied to services such as Facebook, Google, Apple, GitHub, Telegram, and even government systems. Experts warn that this breach could lead to serious security threats.
Instead of stemming from a single hack, the breach combines data from 30 different databases. Hackers recently stole much of the information using infostealer malware. While most companies weren’t directly breached, attackers obtained user credentials and spread them online.
- Over 16 billion credentials published across multiple datasets
- Includes information from top tech companies and government platforms
- Some of the data is fresh and includes tokens and cookies
- Hackers used infostealer tools and credential stuffing tactics
“The scale of this leak is unimaginable. It gives hackers fresh, weaponizable intelligence at scale,” one cybersecurity expert told TechRadar.
As a result, security experts urge users to take immediate action. First, change all passwords, especially for major accounts. Then, enable two-factor authentication using authenticator apps or security keys. It’s also wise to use a password manager to create unique logins for each service. Additionally, check if your accounts were affected using websites like Have I Been Pwned. Lastly, run malware scans to ensure your device hasn’t been compromised.
This event shows how vulnerable reused or stolen passwords can be. Because attackers combined recent and old information, many accounts now face a real risk of takeover.
