Bethesda has officially unveiled The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, a fresh take on the 2006 classic RPG, now available on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. After an early leak, the long-awaited remaster has launched today for $49.99, or through Xbox Game Pass. Developed by Virtuous, the remastered version offers major upgrades in graphics, gameplay, and content, ensuring that both new players and returning fans will have a modern experience.

A Completely Remade Experience with Unreal Engine 5

While many fans hoped for an upgraded version of Oblivion, what they received is far beyond what they expected. Virtuous, the studio behind the remaster, has completely rebuilt the game using Unreal Engine 5, resulting in impressive changes across every aspect of the game. Every asset, from environments to characters, has been remade from scratch, offering Oblivion fans a visually stunning world that feels both fresh and familiar.

This full remake includes:

  • Enhanced Graphics and Lighting: The environments are now more detailed with realistic shadows, improved textures, and dynamic lighting, making the game look incredible on modern hardware.
  • Modernized Animations: Character movements are more fluid, with updated lip-syncing technology and smoother overall animations.
  • Updated Leveling System: The leveling mechanics combine the best of both Oblivion and Skyrim, improving character progression while preserving the original feel of the game.

“Oblivion was a real defining moment for us as a studio, and with this remaster, we’ve updated everything for today’s players without losing what made it so special,” said Todd Howard, studio head at Bethesda.

New Features and Expansions in Oblivion Remastered

In addition to the remastered visuals and gameplay improvements, Oblivion Remastered also includes expansions that further enrich the experience. Both Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles, the game’s most popular DLCs, are included, offering additional quests, items, and locations.

Some of the new features of the game include:

  • Updated User Interface: Menus, maps, and the in-game HUD have been revamped for easier navigation and a better overall experience.
  • Reworked Third-Person View: The camera system now allows for sprinting and has smoother controls, making the third-person gameplay more enjoyable.
  • Improved Enemy Scaling and Combat: The game also addresses combat balance, ensuring the challenge scales appropriately throughout the game.

For those seeking more than just the remaster, Oblivion Remastered Deluxe Edition is available. This edition includes exclusive quests, unique armor, weapon sets, and a digital artbook, along with the official soundtrack. It’s a must-have for Oblivion collectors and those who want to experience the game’s full offerings.

The Long-Awaited Return of Oblivion

The excitement around Oblivion Remastered began last year when rumors surfaced, especially after the FTC’s case against Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard acquisition mentioned the remaster in their documents. The leak also hinted at the possibility of a Fallout 3 remaster and future Dishonored titles. Now that the Oblivion Remaster is officially here, fans can dive back into the game they loved, with a brand new layer of polish and improvements.

“While we’ve modernized a lot of aspects, we’ve kept the soul of the game intact,” says Tom Mustaine, Bethesda’s external projects director. “It’s the same incredible adventure, just with today’s technology bringing it to life in new ways.”

With the combination of the remaster’s improvements and added content, Oblivion Remastered promises to be an unforgettable experience for both long-time fans and newcomers alike.
