What to Wear to the Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island

· · · · ·

Every summer, Governors Island transforms into a Roaring Twenties wonderland during the Jazz Age Lawn Party.

This year’s festivities are slated for June 14–15 and August 9–10, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. While 1920s attire isn’t mandatory, dressing the part enhances the immersive experience and ensures you won’t feel out of place among the flapper dresses and straw boaters.

Ladies: Channel Your Inner Daisy Buchanan

  • Flapper Dresses: Opt for drop-waist dresses adorned with fringe, sequins, or intricate beadwork. These dresses capture the liberated spirit of 1920s women and are perfect for dancing to jazz rhythms.
  • Accessories: Complete your look with long strands of pearls, feathered headbands, and cloche hats. Art Deco-inspired jewelry adds an authentic touch.
  • Footwear: Choose T-strap heels or vintage-inspired flats. Comfort is key, especially if you plan to dance or walk around the island.

Gents: Embrace the Dapper Gentleman Look

  • Suits: Light-colored three-piece suits, especially in linen or seersucker, are ideal. Pair with a crisp dress shirt and a bow tie or necktie.
  • Accessories: Suspenders, pocket squares, and straw boater or Panama hats add flair. Don’t forget polished oxfords or two-tone shoes to complete the ensemble.
