Brooklyn’s Massive Japan Village Summer Festival Is Back, Offering Noodle Challenges and Free Flights to Japan
A free trip to Japan could be on your agenda this weekend. The Japan Village Summer Festival returns to Industry City this Saturday, August 23, from 1 PM to 6 PM. The main attraction is the chance to win round-trip tickets to Japan by participating in one of three public competitions at the free-to-attend event.
How to Win Your Way to Japan
Your dancing or eating skills could land you a flight to Japan. The festival features three separate contests, each with a grand prize of airfare. You don’t need to pre-register for the two dance competitions; just show up at the Japan Village courtyard stage and perform.
- Ouchi-no Tonosama Dance Contest: Takes place at 3:00 PM. The best dancer will receive round-trip tickets to Yamaguchi, Japan, along with a hotel voucher for Yuda Onsen.
- Kuroishi Yosare Dance Contest: Begins at 4:50 PM. The winner of this contest gets round-trip tickets to Kuroishi, Japan, and a hotel voucher for Itadome Onsen.
The third competition is the Wanko Soba eating contest, which requires on-site registration. Entry is free, but an ID is required. Registration opens at 12:30 PM in the courtyard, where the first 100 people will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to compete. The drawing for participants is scheduled for 2:00 PM. All contestants must sign a liability waiver, and those under 18 will need a waiver signed by a guardian.
What Else to Expect at the Festival
Even if you do not plan to compete, the festival offers a full day of activities. The event, which anticipates over 8,000 attendees, will fill the indoor-outdoor space at Japan Village with vendors serving Japanese food and drinks, traditional cultural performances, and games suitable for all ages.
The celebration of Japanese culture takes place at Japan Village, located at 934 Third Avenue in Brooklyn’s Industry City complex. The event runs from 1 PM to 6 PM on Saturday, August 23.
