Chris Brown Arrested in UK for 2023 Nightclub Assault Case
British police arrested singer Chris Brown in Manchester for allegedly attacking a music producer with a bottle at a nightclub in February 2023.
Officers detained the 36-year-old artist at The Lowry Hotel around 2 a.m. They acted on claims that Brown seriously injured music producer Abe Diaw during a night out at Tape, a club located in the Mayfair area of London.
According to Diaw, Brown struck him several times in the head with a Don Julio 1942 tequila bottle. He says Brown then kicked and punched him while he lay unconscious. Medical reports show Diaw suffered deep head wounds and a torn leg ligament, requiring hospital care and a lengthy recovery using crutches.
In October 2023, Diaw responded by filing a civil lawsuit. He demanded $16 million in damages, citing both physical harm and reputational loss. In the suit, he also accused Brown of spreading lies, specifically calling him a thief. Diaw says those rumors damaged his standing in the music industry.
“Getting hurt was one thing, but having my name dragged through the mud made it worse,” Diaw said in a statement last fall.
Meanwhile, Brown had been preparing for his “Breezy Bowl XX” tour, a set of shows marking two decades since his debut. The UK leg of the tour includes stops in Manchester, London, Cardiff, and Glasgow. As of now, his team hasn’t announced any changes to the schedule.
Police say detectives from the Central West Area Command are leading the investigation. They have not filed formal charges yet, but the case remains open.
Brown’s legal history adds weight to the latest arrest. In 2009, he pleaded guilty to assaulting singer Rihanna. Years later, in 2017, actress Karrueche Tran obtained a restraining order against him, citing threats and violence.
