New York City Braces for Busier 2025 Hurricane Season

New York City may face more storms this year. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) expects a more active Atlantic hurricane season in 2025.
According to NOAA, thereās a 60% chance of above-normal activity. This year could see 13 to 19 named storms. Of those, 6 to 10 might become hurricanes, and 3 to 5 could reach major strength with winds over 111 mph.
Several factors are fueling the forecast:
- Exceptionally warm Atlantic ocean temperature
- A shift toward La NiƱa conditions
- Weak upper-level winds that support storm development
- Increased monsoon activity from West Africa
NOAA said the ocean is ārecord-warmā and that La NiƱa can ācreate more favorable conditions for storm formation.ā
This raises concerns for coastal sites like New York City. In hurricane season 2024, Beryl led to street flooding in Brooklyn. Hurricane Debby knocked out power in parts of Queens.
NOAAās outlook also shows:
- A hurricane season window from June 1 to November 30
- Peak activity expected from August through October
- Increased risk of landfalling storms
āAs we witnessed last year with significant inland flooding from hurricanes Helene and Debby, the impacts of hurricanes can reach far beyond coastal communities,ā said Acting NOAA Administrator Laura Grimm.
City emergency services are urging residents to stay informed, check evacuation plans, and prepare supplies. NYC officials are already planning for potential storms with neighborhood outreach and safety updates.
The Atlantic season begins in early June, with NOAA advising all coastal regions to stay alert.
