Batman is back in brick form. Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight has officially been announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025. It marks the return of TT Games to Gotham. The new title promises an open-world Gotham City, complete with Batmobile driving, Arkham-inspired combat, and a story that pulls from decades of Batman history.

TT Games’ Return to Gotham

The project comes from TT Games, the studio behind Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and over 20 other licensed Lego titles. Unlike past Lego Batman entries, Unreal Engine 5 powers Legacy of the Dark Knight. This gives Gotham a darker, more cinematic look. The game will be released in 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store).

A Story Spanning Batman’s Legacy

The story begins with a young Bruce Wayne training a new League of Shadows. Along the way, players will team up with Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman, Jim Gordon, and Talia al Ghul. The rogues’ gallery equally stacks, featuring The Joker, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Ra’s al Ghul, and Bane—voiced by Matt Berry.

Jim Lee, DC’s Chief Creative Officer, described the game as a “love letter to the world of Batman,” highlighting how it blends Batman’s many eras into one unified experience.

Easter Eggs and Movie References in the Trailer

The reveal trailer was packed with nods to Batman’s cinematic and comic book history. Fans spotted:

  • Adam West-era onomatopoeia visuals echoing the 1960s Batman show.
  • Dark Knight trilogy callbacks, including Joker’s “Why so serious?” and the Batman Begins shipping container fight.
  • Robert Pattinson’s Batman references, from the Penguin car chase to Jeffrey Wright’s Jim Gordon.
  • Michael Keaton nods, including the classic Danny Elfman theme, mime goons, and the “You wanna get nuts?” line.
  • Arkham game elements, like explosive gel and Arkham-style combat animations.

This mashup of references suggests Legacy of the Dark Knight is aiming to be the definitive Lego Batman game, pulling inspiration from every corner of the Caped Crusader’s lore.

A New Era for Lego Games

From 2005 to 2022, TT Games dominated licensed Lego games, releasing hits across franchises like Marvel, Harry Potter, and Star Wars. After the turbulent development of The Skywalker Saga, the studio slowed down. Now, with Legacy of the Dark Knight, TT Games seems poised for a big comeback—especially with fans eager for a new Arkham-style Batman experience.

Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will release in 2026. For fans of Lego and Gotham’s protector, the wait may feel long. However, the trailer hints at one of TT Games’ most ambitious projects yet.
