This Thursday June 19, the Empire State Building will light up in red, black, and green to mark Juneteenth. The colors will shine from sunset until 2 am, offering a visible tribute across the New York City skyline.

These colors represent the Pan-African flag. Red reflects the bloodshed in the fight for freedom. Black stands for the people’s identity and resilience. Green points to Africa, where many trace their ancestry.

Details to remember:

  • Date: Thursday, June 19, 2025
  • Time: Sunset (≈ 8:30 pm) to 2 am
  • Colors: Red (sacrifice), Black (identity), Green (ancestral land)

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas learned they were free—two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It became a federal holiday in 2021 and has gained growing recognition in cities across the U.S.

New York City will join in with lights across several landmarks. In addition to the Empire State Building, places like City Hall and One Vanderbilt are also expected to display the Pan-African colors.

The Empire State Building’s official lighting schedule names the display: “Red, Black and Green – In Honor of Juneteenth.” The building uses its LED lights to observe a wide range of national and cultural events.
