An explosion shook a chemical warehouse near Seville, Spain, on Tuesday afternoon, sending thick black smoke into the air and prompting officials to tell thousands of people to shelter indoors.

The blast occurred around 1:20 p.m. local time at Plainsur, a facility in Alcalá de Guadaíra, located about 16 kilometers southeast of Seville. The warehouse stores flammable industrial chemicals. Flames and smoke rose rapidly from the site, and within minutes, emergency alerts reached nearby communities.

Authorities quickly sent messages to roughly 25,000 people within a three-kilometer radius. They urged residents to stay inside, close their windows, and wear masks if stepping outdoors. Later updates suggested that up to 80,000 people may have been affected by these warnings.

Fire crews from several surrounding towns—including Utrera, Arahal, La Rinconada, and Mairena del Alcor—rushed to the scene. The Andalusian regional government also declared a Level 1 emergency, allowing officials to coordinate the response more efficiently.

Here’s what we know so far:

  • The explosion happened at Plainsur in the La Red industrial zone
  • The facility stores chemicals such as ethylene and toluene, both known for being highly flammable.
  • Two people sustained injuries: one warehouse worker suffered burns, while a firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation. Both remain in stable condition.
  • Approximately 25,000 residents received emergency shelter-in-place notices. Some estimates say as many as 80,000 people took precautions.
  • By the evening, firefighters had brought the fire largely under control.

“I saw the smoke from my balcony. It kept rising and got darker quickly. We stayed inside and didn’t open the windows,” a local resident said.

So far, investigators have not confirmed what caused the explosion. However, early reports point to either a chemical reaction or a mechanical fault. Plainsur has not issued a public comment yet.

Meanwhile, health officials continue to monitor the air quality. Although they have not issued new evacuation orders, they have advised people with respiratory conditions to take extra precautions

Earlier this week, another chemical fire in northeastern Spain triggered similar stay-at-home alerts for more than 150,000 people. As a result, many locals in Seville have expressed growing concern over the safety of industrial zones near residential areas.
