Ananda Lewis, former MTV VJ and television host, died at 52. She passed away on June 11, 2025, in hospice care at her Los Angeles home after a diagnosis of stage 4 breast cancer.

She launched her media career in the 1990s on BET’s Teen Summit. Later, she became one of MTV’s most visible hosts, leading programs like Total Request Live and The Hot Zone. In 1999, The New York Times described her as “the hip-hop generation’s reigning It Girl.”

In 2020, Lewis announced that doctors had diagnosed her with stage 3 breast cancer. She discovered a lump during a self-exam and admitted that she had delayed mammograms due to concerns about radiation. “For a really long time, I have refused mammograms, and that was a mistake,” she explained in a video.

By 2024, her cancer had reached stage 4. Lewis chose holistic treatments and focused on nutrition and lifestyle changes. However, she later expressed regret for not having surgery earlier. “I wish I could go back,” she said. Despite the progression of her illness, she kept speaking publicly, urging others to schedule early screenings. She often repeated her message: “Prevention is the real cure.”

Throughout her career, she built a multi-faceted profile:

  • Born March 21, 1973
  • Graduated from Howard University in 1995
  • Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020
  • Died June 11, 2025
  • Known for both her media presence and health advocacy

Besides her role on MTV, Lewis hosted The Ananda Lewis Show and later served as a correspondent on The Insider. She also trained in carpentry and, after becoming a mother, spent more time away from the spotlight.

She is survived by her son Langston, born in 2011. His father is Harry Smith, the brother of actor Will Smith.

‘Helped Raise a Generation of Music Fans’

Her sister Lakshmi confirmed her death in a social media post, writing, “She’s free … Lord, rest her soul.” MTV paid tribute to her legacy with the statement, “Through her on‑air hosting and interviews, Ananda helped raise a generation of music fans.”

Ananda Lewis left behind more than just her television work. She used her experience to educate others, highlighting the importance of early detection and informed health choices.
