Senator Alex Padilla Handcuffed While Attempting to Question DHS
Democratic Senator Alex Padilla of California was handcuffed while trying to ask questions at a Department of Homeland Security press event in Los Angeles. The confrontation occurred during a discussion on immigration enforcement.
On June 12, Padilla stood up during Secretary Kristi Noem’s speech at the Wilshire Federal Building. He introduced himself and began asking questions. However, Secret Service and DHS agents quickly forced him to the ground and placed him in handcuffs.
Officials later explained that Padilla didn’t follow commands and wasn’t visibly wearing Senate identification. “He did not wear any official congressional identification and acted outside of normal protocol,” a DHS spokesperson said.
Despite that explanation, video footage clearly shows Padilla stating, “I am Senator Alex Padilla. I have questions for the secretary,” before agents restrained him. Authorities released him shortly after confirming his identity.
Padilla responded by saying, “This administration wants to intimidate anyone who challenges them. But I won’t be silent.” He also expressed concern about how others without his position might be treated.
The incident sparked strong reactions. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the video “reeks of totalitarianism.” Governor Gavin Newsom called the response “shameful” and “dictatorial.”
Meanwhile, several Republicans criticized Padilla. Some accused him of trying to stage a media stunt. Others argued that his actions disrupted an official event.
Later that day, Padilla and Noem met privately for about 15 minutes. Neither disclosed details of their conversation.
- Padilla asked questions about immigration at the DHS press event
- Security tackled and handcuffed him despite his clear identification
- DHS claimed he didn’t wear visible credentials
- He was released after ID verification

The brief detention has become part of a broader debate over immigration enforcement and the treatment of public officials during federal events.
