Trump Issues Travel Ban for 12 Countries, Adds Limits for 7
President Donald Trump has implemented a new travel ban, affecting citizens from 19 countries. It blocks travel to the U.S. from 12 nations completely and applies tighter rules for seven others. The rule starts on June 9.
The move follows a recent violent event in Boulder, Colorado. Officials say the suspect was from Egypt, which is not on the ban list. Still, the White House said the ban is to help protect national security. The government believes some countries aren’t doing enough to share threat details or stop visa overstays.
“The restrictions and limitations imposed by this proclamation are, in my judgment, necessary to prevent the entry or admission of foreign nationals about whom the United States Government lacks sufficient information to assess the risks they pose to the United States,” said President Trump in an official proclamation.
Full travel bans apply to:
- Afghanistan
- Burma (Myanmar)
- Chad
- Republic of the Congo
- Equatorial Guinea
- Eritrea
- Haiti
- Iran
- Libya
- Somalia
- Sudan
- Yemen
Partial restrictions now affect:
- Burundi
- Cuba
- Laos
- Sierra Leone
- Togo
- Turkmenistan
- Venezuela
Some people are not affected. Those include:
- Green card holders
- People with visas from before the ban
- Dual citizens with passports from countries not on the list
- Diplomats
- Athletes going to global sports events
- Close family of U.S. citizens with documents to prove it
- Special visa holders who worked with U.S. troops
Not everyone agrees with the move. Immigration groups and civil rights groups say it unfairly targets certain countries and puts many in danger. Legal battles may be ahead, much like those that followed Trump’s earlier bans during his first term.
