New York City Might Soon Legalize Bodega Cats

New York City could soon update its health code to allow bodega cats officially. These animals, often seen lounging in corner stores, help control rats but have never been fully legal. That situation may soon change, thanks to a new bill introduced by Councilmember Keith Powers, who is running for Manhattan Borough President.
Powers introduced the bill to change the city’s health code and permit cats in bodegas. Under the new rules, store owners must register their cats, keep them vaccinated, and ensure they are spayed or neutered.
“Bodega cats embody the New York spirit: friendly, welcoming, and anti-rat. I’m proud that my legislation will codify them into city law and provide resources to keep them healthy,” explained Powers.
Many owners already rely on cats to keep rodents away. However, inspectors currently issue fines because health rules ban animals in stores that sell food. This bill aims to fix that problem while also making sure the cats receive proper care.
Public support for the measure is strong. Dan Rimada, who runs Bodega Cats of New York, started a petition that collected over 13,000 signatures. Supporters argue that bodega cats are not just helpful but also bring comfort to neighborhoods. Here are the key points of the bill:
- Legalize bodega cats under city law
- Require vaccination, and spaying or neutering
- Register each cat with the city
- Provide free vaccinations through a public program
The City Council received the bill on June 13. If passed, New York City will become the first in the nation to fully legalize bodega cats. Furthermore, state lawmakers may consider similar legislation in the future.
