John Brenkus, Emmy-Winning 'Sport Science' Host, Dies at 54

John Brenkus, who became known for bringing science into the sports world, died at 54. His family confirmed he passed away on May 31, 2025, following a long struggle with depression.

Brenkus led “Sport Science,” a show that examined athletic performances using scientific tools and methods. First airing in 2007, the program ran on Fox Sports Net before moving to ESPN. It earned six Sports Emmy Awards and became a popular feature in sports media.

Beyond television, he co-founded BASE Productions and launched the digital network Brinx TV. In 2010, he published The Perfection Point, exploring the limits of human capability.

He spoke publicly about his personal mental health in 2023. After selling his original show, he shared that he felt isolated and mentally lost. “I literally picked up my phone, called my mom, and said: ‘There’s something wrong with me. I am mentally lost,’” Brenkus said at the time.
