Just a short ride from the hustle of Manhattan and Brooklyn, Governors Island offers a quick escape from city streets. But before you stretch out on the lawns or cycle the car-free paths, you’ll need to hop on a ferry. Whether it’s your first visit or you’re returning after a few years, knowing how the ferry system works can save time and help you avoid common hiccups.

Where to Catch the Ferry

There are two primary ferry terminals that serve Governors Island:

  • Battery Maritime Building (Manhattan): Located at 10 South Street near the Staten Island Ferry terminal.
  • Brooklyn Ferry (Pier 6 at Brooklyn Bridge Park): Runs weekends and holidays only.

On weekends, NYC Ferry’s South Brooklyn Route also offers limited service directly to Governors Island from Red Hook, Atlantic Avenue, and DUMBO. Note that NYC Ferry tickets are separate from the Governors Island-operated ferry.
